Gold Coast celebrity doctor Bill Anseline is the star boxer’s personal physician, the same role he performed for 16 years for Tszyu’s champion father Kostya during his stellar fight career.
Dr Anseline – a medico for major touring acts including Harry Styles and Ed Sheeran as well as sports stars and Hollywood actors – is one of the key members of ‘Team Tszyu 2’ who helped prepare the fighter for his stunning world title win against American Tony Harrison in Sydney last weekend.
The doctor was in the thick of wild celebrations ringside when Tszyu knocked out Harrison in the ninth round to set up a likely, mouth-watering showdown with unified super welterweight champion Jermell Charlo later this year.
“It was spine-tingling stuff, especially when Tim yelled ‘what’s my motherf … king name?,” said Dr Anseline, who is “like an uncle” to Tszyu and younger boxing brother Nikita.
The jibe was aimed squarely at Charlo who has poked fun at Tszyu‘s surname. Harrison was the only fighter ever to have beaten him.
Dr Anseline barely had to lift a latex-gloved finger after the thrilling bout, such was Tszyu’s dominance.
“Tim hardly had a mark on him,” he said.
“He sat down in a chair afterwards and said he could go another 12 rounds.
“This was a do or die fight and there was just pure elation and some tears after he won. It was a similar feeling to when Kostya beat (Zab) Judah (IBF light welterweight world champion) in his most famous fight back in 2001.
“Tim just deconstructed Harrison and sent a message to Charlo and it was another very proud moment for the team. Nikita put the icing on the cake with his (preliminary bout) win.”
Dr Anseline used to work as a club and pub doorman in his native Newcastle with the Tszyu family’s long-time boxing manager Glen Jennings and the pair have forged a long association in the fight game and entertainment industry.
“It’s a tight-knit and very disciplined team and Glen’s the undisputed ringmaster,” he said.
“He’s a genius. Even Harrison said he was the best manager in the world.”
Jennings said “Dr Bill” played a critical role in the team, treating the Tszyu brothers and female world champ Shannon “O’Connell for “everything from a cold to a busted knuckle”.
“Our job is to come together and create a perfect environment for our fighters to function at 100 per cent without distraction,” Jennings said.
“Tim has to win. If he doesn’t win, we as a group have failed.”
Queensland missed out on the chance to host the Tszyu-Harrison fight but Dr Anseline said the Sunshine State could get another opportunity “when Tim beats Charlo”.
