MURDER accused Garry Dubois allegedly told a policeman in a conversation about the missing McCulkin family 36 years ago: “If I blab I’m dead, and I’ll be an old man in jail if I don’t”.
Mrs McCulkin, 34, and daughters Vicki, 13, and Leanne, 11, vanished from their Highgate Hill home on January 16, 1974.
Dubois, 69, has pleaded not guilty to charges including murder, rape and deprivation of liberty for allegedly helping Vincent O’Dempsey murder the trio, and he is facing day eight of a trial in the Brisbane Supreme Court today.
Former South Australian police officer John Attwood gave evidence this afternoon about a conversation he claims he had with Dubois in 1980 when he was arrested on a drugs charge and being extradited from that state to Queensland.
He said Dubois was “close to tears” and “very upset and agitated”.
“He said f**king murder, I can’t believe it,” Mr Attwood said.
“(Dubois said) if I blab I’m dead and I’ll be an old man in jail if I don’t.”
Mr Attwood said Dubois told him he wished police had “taken me out” when he was arrested at a home at Christies Beach in Adelaide.
“If you had got me at the house yesterday my worries would be over, I’ve got to cop it,” Mr Attwood said Dubois told him.
Mr Attwood said Dubois kept repeating “he’s f**king mad”.
He said Dubois told him he was “guilty by association, that’s it”.
It is alleged Dubois assisted O’Dempsey, who is due to face trial next year, by either restraining the victims or encouraging him through his presence.
The trial continues.
