A man bitten by a shark off a Queensland beach has shared footage of the bloody aftermath of the gruesome attack that cost him his leg.
Matteo Mariotti, 20, was bitten on the lower leg while snorkelling off of the Town of 1770 on December 8.
The footage captures his harrowing screams and panicked movements in the moments immediately after he was bitten.
He is pulled to shore by friend and diving instructor, Tommaso Agosti when the footage captures the horrific injuries suffered to his leg, with large bite marks visible.
The water around the two turns red as Mr Agosti works to calm Mr Mariotti, holding his leg up and working with him to slow his breathing.
Mr Mariotti is heard screaming “Tommy I’m begging you please help” and “please call somebody for help”.
“I wanted to say goodbye, I never thought I’d survive that monster,” Mr Mariotti said an Instagram post.
Mr Mariotti was rushed to hospital where he underwent lifesaving surgery, but doctors were forced to amputate his leg from the knee down.
“I lost a lot of blood and my leg – I don’t know if they’ll cut it off entirely or if it will stay in half but it doesn’t matter now,” he posted on Instagram.
Mr Mariotti thanked Mr Agosti for saving his life.
“You are my heroes, you are giving me the strength to carry on with your messages and calls, my only dream is to see you again,” he said.
“[Tommaso] I owe you my life. I’ll come home, I love you.”
Despite his horrific injuries, Mr Mariotti was in good spirits, posting in Instagram “Tommaso called me an idiot because I didn’t have Medicare which is Australian insurance”.
Mr Mariotti only moved to Australia last year to study marine biology.
