Footage of dozens of prospective renters lining up outside a rental home in Brisbane suburb Newmarket has emerged, with commenters describing the scene as “insane”.

In a sign of the pressure of the housing market, a video uploaded to Reddit on Wednesday showed more than 30 people attending a viewing for a two-bedroom unit on Gracemere Street.

Listed on realestate.com.au for $416 per week, the rental is between a school and parklands, with the original uploader adding that it was “cheap but not super undervalued.”

Commenters were quick to disagree with the pricing assessment, with one adding that the listing is “pretty bloody cheap”.

“Two beds for $415 … something is too good to be true here,” one person wrote.

“Jesus I knew the market was still hot but this is insane,” another added.

“Late stage capitalism is pretty wild,” a third responded.

Rental insanity

Other commenters said they would leave if they saw a similar turnout at a rental viewing, with the original poster adding that they considered leaving despite arriving 10 minutes early.

“That’s when you say nope, then go buy a lottery ticket because your chances are probably better doing that,” another commenter wrote.

The original uploader said the only downside to the property was a massive tree that crushed the washing line.

They stated that they had been attending more than six rental inspections a week and found many two-bedroom properties were not available for long.
