Homegrown star Margot Robbie has used an international award to donate a substantial sum to Brisbane charity Youngcare, announcing the news in a heartwarming surprise video call to an emotional volunteer.
The Oscar-nominated Queensland actor was on Thursday announced, alongside Charlize Theron and Travis Scott, as a recipient of an inaugural RAD Impact Award honouring her advocacy and charitable work, which allowed her to share an impact donation with a charity of her choice.
In a bid to support her home state, Robbie chose Brisbane not-for-profit charity Youngcare, sharing an undisclosed donation that will enable 15 young people with disabilities to live independently.
“Big or small you can have these big knock on effects and that’s what Youngcare does. It’s just amazing,” Robbie said in a video shared by RAD (Red Carpet Advocacy).
In the heartwarming clip, Robbie shares the news by calling volunteer and previous Youngcare grant recipient Emily Dash, who was told she was being interviewed by a journalist.
Dash, who has cerebral palsy and now lives independently in Sydney because of Youngcare’s support, was visibly emotional as Robbie appeared and introduced herself during the call, which took place over the Easter weekend.
“I have been given a RAD impact award for inspiring purpose. The truth is you, your story, Youngcare, everyone at Youngcare kind of is my purpose and I’m allowed to share this award with someone and I’d like to share it with you,” Robbie told a speechless Dash.
“I’m very, very inspired by you and this is the most meaningful award I’ve ever been given and I’m really happy it’s going to change the lives of other people. This is a really nice thing to share.”
At the end of the video Dash, who will receive the same award as Robbie, is surprised to see her entire family is also on the call.
“Being surprised by Margot Robbie was an incredibly special experience I won’t soon forget,” she said.
“Not only was she super lovely, but I was completely blown away by her generosity. It still makes me emotional to think about the life-changing impact this money will have for the 15 people Youngcare will support. It’s hard to put into words, but I know the feeling because I’ve lived it”.
RAD is a female-founded social enterprise that drives impact for charities and the inaugural awards went to Robbie, Theron, Scott, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Laverne Cox.
“Every time I look at (this award) I’m going to be reminded of this and this moment,” Robbie said.
“I love RAD so much because it is taking the opportunities that we have that sometimes just fly by and become meaningless and actually make them really meaningful. I get to share this and that’s amazing.”
