Harrison DeCaprio, 23, was walking alone when he spotted the alleged violent altercation.

“I didn’t feel safe at the time. I was worried for my own safety,” he told The Courier-Mail. “I’ve never seen anything like this before. It’s getting more dangerous in the area.”

He said the altercation happened in the span of just 30 seconds at approximately 12.28am.

“It happened so fast. Within seconds a guy started swinging at (the victim). He got slammed to the floor, hit his head on the gutter, (they) kneed him and that’s when he fell again. (They) grabbed him by the neck. I was saying ‘chill, relax.’

“(They) put him into a headlock until he couldn’t breathe. I had to run away.” Mr DeCaprio’s personal bodyguard, Joey Kawe, was working in the Gold Coast at the time. Mr Kawe told The Courier-Mail he has noticed an increase in violence over the past eight months in Fortitude Valley.

“There’s a big street fighting problem,” he said. “It wasn’t like this a year-and-a-half ago. It’s worse than Surfer’s Paradise at the moment.”

Investigations are ongoing and anyone with information is being urged to contact police.
