A man in his 40s is in serious condition after he fell up to 20 metres while rock climbing at Kangaroo Point Cliffs.

Critical care paramedics responded to the scene at the Lower River Terrace at 9:48am.

The man is suffering from head and spinal injuries.

He was transported to Princess Alexandra Hospital in a serious but stable condition with head and spinal injuries.

Tom Macfarlane, a climber who witnessed the fall, said the man had dropped a couple of times at about one to two metres, before plunging to the ground.

“The guy was top rope soloing when he had a fall, his capture device failed and he fell about 15 metres before decking,”

“He yelled on the way down and was knocked unconscious on landing.” Mr Macfarlane said.

He said the man was not wearing a helmet and was not roped into his safety device properly.

Derek Stephenson, who said he was a friend of the climber, understood the man fell from the ‘Brisbane Bitter’ section of the cliffs, which is classified as a harder climb.
