A HORROR crash at Chermside in which a car ran a red light and smashed into two other vehicles has been caught on CCTV.
The footage captures the white Toyota Corolla speeding along Gympie Rd before running a red light at the intersection with Rode Rd.
It smashes into the side of a black Holden Barina, sending that vehicle hurtling across the intersection, while the white sedan rolls into the path of a Mitsubishi Pajero.
A 32-year-old man died and five people are in hospital after the serious crash involving five cars in Brisbane’s north on Monday night, with nearby residents telling of the mayhem left in the aftermath.
The collision occurred about 8.15pm at the intersection of Gympie and Rode roads at Chermside and was so significant, one resident said it shook their house.
Police say a white Toyota Corolla travelled through a red light and collided with a Holden Barina and Mitsubishi Pajero, flipping several times before coming to rest near a bus stop.
The sole occupant of the Corolla was declared dead at the scene.
At least five cars were involved in the crash, with the wreckage strewn across 100m of road.
A 57-year-old man, who was driving the Mitsubishi Pajero, was transported to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in a serious condition with facial, chest and neck injuries.
A second male in his 50s was transported to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in a stable condition with chest, neck and back pain.
A male patient in his 30s was transported to Redcliffe Hospital with neck pain and two patients, a male and a female, were both transported in stable conditions to Princess Alexandra Hospital with minor injuries.
A local resident who heard the crash from the inside of his home said the impact “shook the house”.
Another nearby resident, Wsaay Mudany, said she heard the loud crash.
She was distressed when she went and looked towards the scene.
“It was sad, really sad,” Ms Mudany said.
“I was really shocked when I saw it and have never seen anything like this crash,” she said.
Another nearby resident Denis Tarander, who has been living in the area since 2002, said it was the “worst smash up I’ve seen here.”
“Initially there was no screeching, just a loud bang and the sound of metal scraping across the road,” Mr Tarander said.
“All the coppers and the ambos just flew in, hell, west, and crooked and then closed the intersection off, which didn’t open again till midnight.
“It was a bit of mayhem, I could see people just running around everywhere. The traffic couldn’t give a damn they just kept flowing through until the road was closed.”
Police said there were significant delays on Gympie Rd and advised motorists to avoid the area. Diversions were in place.
Inspector Peter Brady confirmed the Toyota had been driving along Rode Rd and ran a red light while turning on to Gympie Rd.
Mr Brady said police were not previously pursuing the Toyota, however it was unknown if the car was stolen.
Gympie Rd was closed in both directions until late in the night.
The forensic crash unit was on scene and investigations were continuing.
