The North Stradbroke Island community is reeling after a local man was killed while tending to shark drum lines.
Billy Frost, who was contracted to service drum lines, was found in the water at South Passage Bar, north of Amity Point on Tuesday afternoon.
It’s understood Mr Frost was tangled in the drum line, which was connected to the boat.
The skipper had taken the shark control vessel out at 6am on Tuesday and was supposed to return three hours later. Police were called at 3.30pm.
Loved ones took to social media yesterday to remember the football fan, including his partner Fiona, who called Billy “the love of her life”.
“If you have someone dear to you hold them a little tighter and hold them a little closer as you never know when you won’t be able to again,” she wrote.
Police said yesterday that they were still trying to ascertain what happened.
The Australian Marine Safety Authority is investigating the incident, while police are preparing a report for the coroner.
Straddie Sharks Rugby League Club took to Facebook to pay their respects.
“Our Island and Club has lost one of the best blokes in the world,” it wrote.
“Billy was an active member of our club, playing for the Opens last year before an injury and coaching our Under-8s.
“Even when he could no longer play, he never missed a game and was a massive supporter of all the teams.
“Straddie Sharks would like to send our condolences to all of Billy’s family and friends in this sad, sad time.
“Rest Easy friend.”
Corey Wimbus said that many hearts were broken for Mr Frost’s family and friends.
