A man has died days after being struck by a pipe at an inner-city Brisbane worksite.
Emergency services were called to the Le Bain construction site at Wyandra St, Newstead, at 12.10pm on Tuesday after two men were struck by a piece of metal piping believed to have fallen from machinery.
The men were working on a drilling rig, where there may have been an issue with the hydraulic line.
One man, 48, was rushed to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in a critical condition with life-threatening head injuries. It was confirmed on Saturday that the man had since died.
The second man was also taken to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in a stable condition.
The CFMEU and ETU have issued a joint statement saying there were “serious questions to be answered”.
“Our thoughts are with the worker’s family and workmates,” the statement read.
“There are serious questions to be answered about why workers were ordered to perform high-risk work in the rain.
“Officials from the CFMEU and the ETU were onsite immediately to ensure the scene was preserved for the investigation.
“Tragedies like this are far too common, which is why union officials must be able to access worksites without delay.”
