A man who was shot by police after he allegedly ran at them with a knife in Brisbane’s south has been charged after spending weeks in hospital.
On December 30, police were called to Amart on Brickworks Place in Rochedale where a man was allegedly threatening workers with a knife about 5.45am.
Officers found the man, 41, inside the warehouse, where he allegedly ran at them with the knife and made threats.
Police tried to taser the man, but it was ineffective. Police were forced to shoot the man once.
At the time of the incident, Acting Chief Superintendent Shane Holmes said police were advised that the man was allegedly damaging vehicles in the car park and was “making a number of threats and calling out”.
The man was taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital for treatment and has since recovered.
Queensland Police Union president Shane Prior said police feared for their life.
“Their partner, who feared for the life of their colleague, used their firearm and shot a single shot towards the 41-year-old male, hitting the male person in the chest,” Mr Prior said.
“Once the [alleged] offender was moved from the knife, both the officers engaged tactical first aid, which I believe saved the life of this [alleged] offender.”
No police officers or members of the public were injured during the incident.
The man has since been charged with eight counts of threaten violence, two counts each of dangerous operation of motor vehicle and wilful damage, and one count each of enter premises with intent to commit indictable offence, acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm and serious assault of a police officer while armed.
The man was remanded in custody and is expected to appear before Brisbane Magistrates Court on February 10.
The incident is the subject of an ongoing investigation by QPS Ethical Standards Command, which is overseen by the Crime and Corruption Commission.
