A reckless driver has been fined over $17,000 - with potentially more to come - after video captured him travelling at over 200km/h while riding on just one wheel.
The horrifying footage was seized by police officer from the man’s own helmet camera, after the Sunshine Coast Road Policing Unit intercepted the 27-year-old in Maroochydore.
According to police, he was pulled over on March 23 after he was seen driving at excessive speeds through wet conditions while riding his BMW bike.
A Queensland Police Service statement said the man’s helmet cam showed numerous times when the man, from Pacific Paradise, allegedly exceeded the speed limit.
“The man’s helmet camera was seized, and a subsequent review of the footage showed the man driving dangerously through traffic on multiple occasions, in one instance allegedly performing a wheel stand at 109 kilometres per hour in a 60 zone from a red light,” the statement said.
He also allegedly conducted a wheel stand at 201 kilometres per hour while passing cars in a 100 zone on the Sunshine Motorway.”
A later search of the man’s home also revealed further alleged offending.
“Officers also located a grow room with hydro set up and eight mature cannabis plants,” the statement said.
Police today charged the man with 10 counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and one count each of produce dangerous drugs, possess dangerous drugs, possess utensils and possess things. He is due to appear in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on May 10.
After reviewing footage, police identified a total of 43 dangerous driving and riding offences, while the man was also issued with 17 infringement notices for speed; three of which were for exceeding the speed limit by more than 40kms per hour.
He was also slapped with 10 infringement notices for fail to have proper control, 2 for unlawful lane filter, 1 cross single line, 1 fail to stop at red light, 1 stop on footpath and 1 disobey direction arrow on the roadway.
The total of his fines tallied an eye watering $17,512, while the man’s motorbike was also seized.
Inspector Shane Panaho said the behaviour was extremely reckless and disappointing in light of the high number of motorcyclists who have lost their lives on Queensland roads this year.
“There’s already twenty-one families whose loved ones never came home this year after being involved in traffic crashes,” he said.
“Rider safety is everyone’s responsibility, but it starts with you as a rider.
“Your behaviour on the road has direct consequences on your life and those around you.”
Investigations are continuing into the possibility of further offences being identified.
