A $500 million upgrade of South East Queensland’s public transport network is chugging along, with new designs for improved train stations at Banyo in Brisbane’s north and Bundamba in Ipswich’s east released for community consultation, and another major station set to reopen after nearly a year of construction.
Transport Minister Mark Bailey said the upgrades would deliver major accessibility improvements including full-length raised platforms for improved boarding, and new additional overbridges with direct lift access to the platforms.
“We want everyone in the local community to access public transport safely and without barriers,” he said.
The development, which is part of the State Government’s $500 million investment in the Station Accessibility Upgrade, seeks to improve the customer experience and accessibility for all customers on the network.
The upgrades come as the Cross River Rail’s Yeronga station in Brisbane’s south prepares to reopen on March 14 after some “headaches”.
Yeronga is one of six stations being rebuilt as part of the Cross River Rail project.
“Constant heavy La Niña rain throughout October and November, then the Omicron Covid wave impact on project workers, created some headaches for Cross River Rail’s Yeronga station team,” Mr Bailey said.
Station works were originally slated to take six months and be completed last October.
The Minister said he appreciated the community’s patience in the nearly 12 months the station was closed.
Images of the Banyo and Bundamba train stations have been shared with the local community and the government is encouraging feedback via an online survey.
The artists’ impressions provided a glimpse into how the project will transform the existing station for the first time.
Queensland Rail is accepting feedback forms for the Banyo and Bundamba train station upgrades, and feedback via email or by calling 1800 722 203 from February 14 to 25.
