Worker injured from fallen grader blade at Curragh mine
A coal mine worker has been hospitalised after being struck by falling grader blade at a Central Queensland site where two workers have died since 2020.
A worker has been injured by a falling grader blade at a Bowen Basin mine.
Emergency services were notified of an incident on the Curragh North mine in Central Queensland on Friday morning, October 24.
The mine, operated by Coronado Global Resources, is 10kms north of Blackwater.
A Resources Safety and Health Queensland spokeswoman said initial reports suggested a worker was attempting to fit a sling to a grader blade that had been
removed from the grader.
“While attaching the sling, the blade fell and hit the worker in the leg,” she said.
A Coronado company spokeswoman said an investigation was underway.
“Coronado’s Emergency Response team was immediately activated and the coal mine worker was taken to the Rockhampton Hospital for treatment,” she said.
RSHQ stated a directive had been issued to suspend similar activities until a review of the worksite safety system was issued to prevent a repeat incident.
The mine has been the site of several work related incidents, including two deaths in the past five years.
Clark Peadon was fatally crushed by a dragline while working at the mine in the early hours of November 21, 2021.
In January 2020, 33-year-old Donald Rabbit was crushed under a five-tonne tyre and killed after a fatal error during a tyre change.
A five-year investigation followed however a coroner failed to continue the inquest into his death.
