A Wilmar sugar-train driver was injured after a major derailment near Victoria Mill early this morning.
Wilmar Sugar Australia confirmed on Friday that the train derailed on the main line between Victoria and Macknade mills along Four Mile Road in Braemeadows.
“The incident happened about 1.45am as the train was hauling full sugar bins to the Lucinda Sugar Terminal,” Herbert Cane Supply Manager Lindsay Wheeler said.
“The train driver was not seriously hurt, but was transported to the Ingham Hospital for observation.”
Mr Wheeler said crews were still clearing the scene and repairing the damaged track.
“We are investigating the cause of the incident,” Mr Wheeler said.
Queensland Ambulance Service said paramedics transported a male in his 60s to Ingham Hospital “in a stable condition after an incident involving two locomotives”.
Workplace Health and Safety Queensland said it was “assessing the causes of the sugar train derailment in Braemeadows”.
“We are also currently reviewing the cane rail supplement of the Sugar Mill Code of Practice, which is for managers of cane railway systems, as well as their workers, operators and workplace health and safety officers and representatives,” it said in a statement.
“The code describes methods for controlling hazards associated with cane rail operations; the machinery, equipment, substances and work practices; and what should be considered to safeguard the health and safety of workers, the public and others.”
