WHALE ALERT: Mother and baby humpback spotted off Mackay
Seeing the duo at sunrise, Ukrainian migrant Marina said: ‘It was unbelievable, like a magical moment’

A MOTHER humpback whale and her calf were spotted lulling about in the ocean off Lamberts Beach this morning.
The incredible sighting was the first time Mackay resident Marina, who migrated from Ukraine in 2018, had ever seen a whale.

"It was unbelievable, like a magical moment," Marina said.
"It was possible to see them from the (Lamberts Beach) lookout with a very good view from dawn.
"I decided to walk the sunrise at 6.30am and at 7am we spotted the whales … I didn't know actually it was a time for whales at the moment."
She said others who were there for the sunset missed out on the "beautiful" sight as they left too soon.

Marina said they could see the whales using the lookout's binoculars but the overhead photographs and video were taken by a man named Stefan using a drone.
When not working full time as a pharmacist, Marina said she spent her time exploring the Mackay region.
"I like it very much, it's a nice place, a lot of beautiful places around like national parks."
