Vehicle-related incident at Poitrel mine at Coppabella

There has been another vehicle-related incident on a Queensland coal mine site, making it the fifth in less than a fortnight.

The world's largest mine blast was recorded at BHP's Poitrel mine site, in the Bowen Basin.

Another vehicle-related incident has unfolded on a Queensland coal mine site, marking the fifth to occur in less than a fortnight.

A Resources Health and Safety Queensland spokeswoman has confirmed two vehicles collided at Stanmore’s Poitrel mine in Coppabella, west of Mackay, on Tuesday.

“A directive suspending dumping activities at Poitrel Mine has now been satisfied,” the spokeswoman said.

“The incident did not result in any injuries to workers.”

The collision follows four other vehicle incidents at Bowen Basin mine sites over the past eight days.

A dozer rolled about 7.30am Monday at Anglo Coal’s Moranbah North mine just hours after the CFMEU had issued a safety alert in response to the spate of rollovers.

On Saturday, an operator was feared dead after his dozer was buried under rubble for eight hours at Peabody’s Moorvale mine in Coppabella.

And in the days prior, a rescue chopper was required to fly a bulldozer operator to Mackay Hopsital after the machinery he was operating rolled multiple times at BHP’s Saraji open pit coal mine north of Dysart on Tuesday, January 24.

He suffered five broken ribs, back and pelvis fractures, substantial bruising and cuts over his body.

Less than 12 hours before the Dysart incident, a dozer “trammed backwards into a body of water” while undertaking mining support activities at Curragh mine at Blackwater about 8.30pm Monday, January 23.

The shocking string of rollovers has prompted calls for a deep dive into ‘tick and flick’ practices within the industry with CFMEU Queensland president Stephen Smyth saying it was a “miracle” the Moorvale contractor got out alive.

“The seriousness of those incidents cannot be emphasised enough,” Mr Smyth said.

This publication contacted Stanmore for comment but did not receive a response.
