A MACKAY company has been awarded the contract to revitalise the city centre's heart.
Vassallo Constructions beat three southern companies for the contract, which will provide more than $3 million worth of jobs from beginning to end.
Managing director Vic Vassallo said it was great for the company.
"We need to congratulate council for making the right choice and using a local contractor," he said.
"We were playing against some pretty big players out there that do this stuff all the time.
"It just shows that Mackay has got the ability, has got the skills and has got the expertise to do such a high profile project."
Mr Vassallo said the challenge for them with this project would be how they would be interacting with business owners.
"The community aspect is something that we will be putting a lot of effort into, making sure that we can interact with the community and the business owners becasue they are going to be affected severely by the works, but we will try and minimise that as much as possible."
Mayor Deirdre Comerford said an extra $27 million worth of employment was forecast to be generated within the economy over the next 10 years as a direct result of the project.
"Investing in our City Centre will improve the quality and experience of the public realm. It will help attract and support the widest range of activities possible to encourage community involvement and new investment," she said.
Cr Comerford said Vassallo's 14 years of demonstrated local experience and expertise made the company a perfect fit for the Revitalisation Project.
