AN INCIDENT at Rainbow Beach this afternoon that has left a woman in a critical condition is believed to have stemmed from a road rage attack.
Earlier reports that a woman was stabbed have now been replaced by a witness account.
'It seems like it was some sort of road rage incident," the witness reported of the Inskip Ave round-a-bout occurrence.
"She stopped the car and the man came up to the car and started stabbing the car with a knife."
The woman, 21, went into cardiac arrest, authorities reported.
Paramedics were able to resuscitate the woman while waiting for a rescue helicopter to arrive near the scene.
A Rainbow Shores worker said he and colleagues had heard ambulances arrive and had hurried to the resort entrance to find the road between them and the Inskip Ave roundabout had been blocked by police.
The woman was flown to the Royal Brisbane Hospital in a critical condition.
The incident is under investigation by Gympie detectives, police said at Rainbow Beach.
Police confirmed a man, who was originally thought to have escaped the scene, has been questioned in relation to the incident.

A WOMAN, 25, has been revived after being reportedly stabbed in an incident near the entrance to the Rainbow Shores resort at Rainbow Beach.
Police are searching for a man who is believed to have fled the scene on the corner of Inskip Ave and Karoonda Rd, running into nearby bush land.
A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said ambulance officers revived the woman and a rescue chopper will be landing on the cricket ground to transport the woman to hospital.
