CONSTRUCTION on the Mackay Northern Access Upgrade will ramp up this month.

The project, near Mount Pleasant, will upgrade the Bruce Highway and major intersections, reduce congestion and improve traffic flow from the Ron Camm Bridge to north of Bald Hill Rd.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads has advised there will be increased activity on the project during May forcing a change in traffic conditions.

This will include approved vegetation removal, excavation, embankment widening, drainage works as well as preparation for bridge works.

“Heavy equipment will be used including excavators, vacuum excavators, trucks, concrete trucks, drilling machines, cranes and piling rigs which will generate some noise,” a department statement said.

Most work will be done between 6am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, though some work will be done overnight between 6pm and 6am.

Residential and pedestrian access will be maintained despite a change in traffic conditions.

Traffic control and signage will be in place.

The Mackay Northern Access Upgrade is part of the Bruce Highway Upgrade Program (BHUP) jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments.
