Top performing Mackay primary school rankings revealed for 2021

An independent analysis has identified Queensland’s top performing primary schools, and Mackay has made the cut. Read to see the five schools and which one sits high above the rest.

Better Education recently ranked Queensland’s best performing schools using their Year 5 results for 2021.

The schools are placed in order of their State Overall Score which compared their maths and English results with the rest of the state.

The data of schools outside the top five is not publicly available.

The aim of Better Education is to provide information to help parents make choices about schooling for their children.

Here are the top five performers in Mackay.

5. St Mary’s Catholic Primary School

St Mary’s holds a State Overall Score of 89 which places it in Better Education’s top 28 percentile.

Out of the five star equivalent ranking system, the South Mackay school rates a four in English and a three in maths.

The school had 380 total enrolments in 2021, with their students’ socio economic status ranked a 70 out of 100.

4. St Brendan’s Catholic Primary School

St Brendan’s compared similarly to St Mary’s, also rated a four out of five for English and three out of five for maths.

The Mackay school received a State Overall Score of 90 which places it in the top 26 percentile of the state.

It is the smallest school on this list with 320 total enrolments for 2021 with a socio economic status rating of 61.

3. Emmanuel Catholic Primary School

Emmanuel narrowly outperformed St Brendan’s achieving the same rating for English and maths, and the same State Overall Score.

The 600 student Mount Pleasant school was placed 338th in the state, putting it in the top 25 percentile.

The cohort holds a socio economic status score of 64.

They improved upon last year’s overall score, largely from a better performance in English.

2. St Francis Xavier Catholic Primary School

St Francis Xavier was ranked 260th in Queensland with a State Overall Score of 93.

The Mackay West school achieved a four out of five rating in both English and maths, and sits in the top 19 percentile statewide.

From 560 total enrolments, the school holds a socio economic status score of 68.

The results are a major improvement on 2020, where they were rated three out of five in both English and maths and achieved an overall score of 87.

1. Whitsunday Anglican School

Whitsunday Anglican School was the 43rd best performer in the state for 2021 and a clear leader in the Mackay region.

The Beaconsfield cohort achieved a State Overall Score of 99 for the seventh straight year, but only ranked in the top 4 percentile of schools when they have been in the top 2 per cent since 2017.

They achieved a five out of five rating in both English and maths.

Their 730 total enrolled students hold a socio economic status score of 95.

ANALYSIS

– Mackay’s top five performers were all non-government schools

– Across the board, Mackay schools perform stronger in English than they do maths

– St Francis Xavier, Emmanuel and St Brendan’s all improved on their results from 2020, while Whitsunday Anglican and St Mary’s only a received a narrow decline which suggests the region’s education has trended upwards.
