DESPITE being worried that his taste in artwork has become more conservative into his old age, Art on Show judge Robert Heather said while his choice leaned to a more traditional style, the winning work stood out to him due to the technical ability of the artist.

The winning work, Old Girl Resting, painted by Mackay artist Bradley Short, depicts the a moody and isolated scene on the easily recognisable Town Beach. The viewer's attention is drawn to the middle ground of the painting where the abandoned yacht that has sat on Town Beach since April lies beached on a sand bank.

Coordinator of the Art on Show awards, Melissa Broadhurst, said she was very happy to see the top prize, the Woollam Constructions Art on Show Award, go to the Mackay-based artist whose work represents the local community.

"I am so thrilled for him. His work has just come along greatly... it is very good to see,” she said.

Mr Heather, who selected Mr Short's painting from more than 260 entries submitted from as far as Cairns and Tasmania, said the work stood out from other entries.

"Brad's work has such technical prowess and it is a fantastic capturing of a site and a place in time,” he said.

"Just the sheer skill in that work is very apparent, so it is something that just stands out in the exhibition.”

Art on Show chose Mr Heather to judge the competition due to his ties to the region's art community.

When Mackay's first gallery, Artspace Mackay, opened in 2003 Mr Heather was the gallery's first director and launched programs including the Libris Awards and the Focus on Artists' Books event.

"It is the first time I have been back in Mackay for just over 10 years so it is good to come back, it has been a long time,” he said.

"It is nice to see things like Artspace Mackay still going strong, there is a lot of growth that has happened in the last 10 years.

Mr Short's artwork, alongside other works entered in Art on Show, will be on display and for sale during the Mackay Show, which starts today.
