Keen youngsters are leading the way as the call goes out for more participants to register for the BMA Mackay Marina Run on June 5.

Organiser Sandy Strong said he was impressed with the number of registered participants so far but there was room for more.

“Numbers are building well ahead of the 2011 event and we expect between 1200 to 1500 people,” Mr Strong said.

“I am very excited to see this grow into a major regional event.”

The annual run aims to raise funds for Mackay branch of the Leukaemia Foundation. Last year more than $45,000 was raised.

“Another major objective is to create a fantastic running event that does justice to this wonderful region,” Mr Strong said.

The annual event also highlighted health, fitness and tourism, he said.

“It promotes the value of health and fitness by introducing non-runners to the incredibly rewarding natural activity of running and helps tourism by ensuring the running routes showcase the best features of the city such as the Marina, Pioneer River and parkways.”

Participants can take part in the BMA half marathon, Balance Podiatry 8km run, City Fitness 5km run/walk, Clarion Hotel Corporate Challenge and the Daily Mercury 3km junior dash.

“The corporate challenge is becoming huge with some organisations entering up to four teams, which creates a real buzz in workplaces,” Mr Strong said.

Each event kicks off from a point at the Mackay Harbour, with the longer races winding through the city and along the Pioneer River.

There are major cash prizes for those who gain a place.

Entertainment from jazz and rock bands is provided at selected locations.

Racing will begin with the half marathon at 6.45am.

A recovery session will be held inside the surf club at 2pm for those who have finished their races.
