A teen remains in intensive care and may have permanent injuries after he was thrown from a dirt bike at speed on a private beach.

The tragic truth about road deaths in Australia

A Campwin Beach teen may have permanent spinal injuries after he was flung from a dirt bike while riding on a private beach strip south of Mackay.

The 17 year old remains in a critical but stable condition in a Brisbane intensive care unit more than a week after the incident on April 9.

A police spokesman said he had been riding a dirt bike at about 80 to 100km/h on Johnsons Beach, which is a private beach strip at Sarina, when he likely hit a rough or soft sand patch.

It is understood he lost control of the bike and was thrown off.

The incident occurred about 5pm.

He was initially flown to Mackay Base Hospital before he was moved to the Princess Alexandra Hospital that night.

The RACQ CQ Rescue helicopter was tasked to fly the critically-injured teenager to Mackay before he was later moved to Brisbane in a critical condition.

The teen suffered head, chest and internal injuries as well as possible spinal injuries.

It is understood he may have suffered permanent spinal injuries as a result and it is unknown at this stage if he will walk again.

An RACQ CQ Rescue spokeswoman said the 17 year old lost control of the dirt bike on the beach.

The teen had to be loaded into the still moving chopper, which had landed on the beach, because of the fast incoming tide.

The aircraft then moved to a school oval near the beach so the medical team on board, which included a critical care paramedic and doctor, could work on the patient for just under an hour before he was flown to Mackay.

Mackay Forensic Crash Unit was also sent to investigate the scene ahead of an incoming tide on the Saturday.
