A $1.6bn mining contract will deliver 650 new coal mining jobs to the Bowen Basin. The owners had shut down a smaller site down the road just months earlier.

A Bowen Basin mining company has finalised a five-year deal to contract out mining operations of one of their coal sites, with 650 jobs to come.

Golding Contractors will undertake the coal mining operations at Stanmore Resources’ South Walker Creek site, previously owned by BHP.

Golding Contractors is owned by NRW Group, and currently operates at the Baralaba North Mine, Kogan Creek Mine, Curragh Coal Mine and Stanmore’s Isaac Plains coal mine.

The $1.6bn contract will cover pre-strip, coal mining operations and operating eight fleets of heavy mining equipment, starting January 1, 2026.

The new mining services agreement provides employment to approximately 650 personnel mostly residing within the region, according to NRW.

NRW chief executive Jules Pemberton said the new agreement tips the company’s order book past the $7bn mark.

“NRW’s drilling and blasting subsidiary ADB is currently working with Stanmore at SWC and Golding now renews its prior association,” Mr Pemberton said.

Stanmore Resources said this contract added certainty to South Walker Creek.

In July Stanmore shut down its Mavis Underground Coal Mine, just 40 minutes up the road.
