St Patrick’s College has a new schoolboy hero after Ethan Cocco scored a late try in the Aaron Payne Cup clash to topple a powerhouse Kirwan side.
For the first time in the Aaron Payne Cup era, and the first time in 21 years, St Patrick’s has defeated Kirwan State High School.
St Pat’s was trailing late in the match against Kirwan, but the front rower broke through the defensive lines with just four minutes remaining.

The try drew the sides even, before Brady Hazledine converted to take the lead 18-16.
Kirwan had the opportunity to score late, but an errant pass led to an interception to seal the win for St Patrick’s.
Liam Doherty was strong against Kirwan, scoring a try in the first half.
Doherty was crunched late in the match but played out the match with a rib concern.
St Pat’s raced out to a 10-0 lead early in the first half, after Kai Simon and Liam Doherty scored early tries.

Kirwan responded quickly with a pair of tries to tie up the clash at 10-10 at half time.
Hazledine converted a penalty kick to take a 12-10 lead, but Kirwan retook the advantage with a try and conversion.
Trailing 16-12, St Pat’s marched down the field in a little more than a minute before Cocco’s heroics.
The stunning result has left St Patrick’s undefeated after two rounds, with a five-week break between Aaron Payne Cup games.
