St Patrick’s College and Mercy College dominated Mackay SHS in the Aaron Payne Cup and Cowboys Challenge on Tuesday
The first round of the Aaron Payne Cup and Cowboys Challenge is over, with St Patrick’s College and Mercy College winning the opening matches against Mackay SHS.

St Patrick’s College opened its Aaron Payne Cup campaign with a dominant display over Mackay State High School on Tuesday.
St Pat’s scored early and often, breaking out to an 18-0 lead at half time before finishing the match 42-6 winners.
Liam Doherty was judged best afield in the win and collected the Alf Abdullah blazer for his efforts.
Doherty scored a second-half try and was influential in controlling the pace of the side’s attack plays.
Cody Nielsen was also strong for St Pat’s with the hooker tackling well and breaking through for the second try of the match.
St Pat’s had an even contribution on the scoreboard, with seven singular try scorers throughout the game.
Bailey Jeffs and Brady Hazledine were perfect in converting their seven shots for St Pat’s between them.
Ngakau Ufton broke through for a Mackay SHS try late in the second half to get his side on the board, before he also converted the shot at the posts.
His try was merely a consolation prize as St Pat’s already held an unassailable lead.
The Aaron Payne Cup clash followed the Cowboys Challenge match between Mackay SHS and Mercy College, with the latter winning 36-0.
St Patrick’s College will face Kirwan SHS in Townsville on Tuesday next week, while Mackay SHS will play Ignatius Park College away on Wednesday.
On both days the games will start at 12.45pm for the Cowboys Challenge, and from 1.45pm for the Aaron Payne Cup.
