See who performed best in the Mackay Cricket grand finals for 2024/25 senior competitions

With third grade getting on the park this weekend, find out which players have been added to our list of the 15 best grand final performers.

Mackay Cricket’s senior season for 2024/25 reached its climactic conclusion for most grades on the weekend before last, with teams across first, second and fourth grades playing off in their respective grand finals.

Pioneer Valley had a very successful day out, winning both the first and second grade T20 premierships, defeating Walkerston and Magpies respectively to claim the titles.

Meanwhile, Walkerston managed to get on top in its fourth grade battle with Magpies.

The third grade final between Magpies and Pinnacle was postponed until Saturday, with the teams eventually getting to play at McLennan Park.

And it was Pinnacle who triumphed over Magpies by 37 runs.

First grade

Mitch English (Pioneer Valley) - 59 (44)

The linchpin of PV’s innings, English set the tone at the top of the order, as he steered his side to 2-111 before departing with the victory all but secured.

Mason Kohler (Pioneer Valley) - 3/23 (4 overs)

The spearhead of the Panthers’ attack, Kohler picked up the key wickets of openers Sam Vassallo and Jakob Frerichs.

Chris Mceldowney (Walkerston) - 31 (17)

Produced a solid knock through the middle which kept the scoreboard ticking over for Walkerston.

Sam Vassallo (Walkerston) - 35 (29)

Was solid at the top of the order as he looked to lay the foundations for a big score.

Second grade

Matthew Doolan (Pioneer Valley) - 3/18 (4 overs)

Critical to the Panthers’ success was their ability to take regular wickets, and Doolan was the leading wicket-taker with his three.

Haiden Mellifont (Pioneer Valley) - 41 (47)

Led the charge in the Panthers’ run chase at first drop.

Ben Schembri (Pioneer Valley) - 34* (36), 2/11 (4 overs)

A fantastic all around performance which saw him pick up a pair of wickets before steering his side to victory with the bat.

Janath De Silva (Magpies) - 2/14 (4 overs)

Proved to be the most effective bowler at keeping Pioneer Valley in check as they ultimately reached their target.

Third grade

Jacob Aquilina (Pinnacle) - 50 (64)

Aquilina led the charge with the bat for Pinnacle, raising the bat for a half-century as he set his side up for a strong total.

Shaun Fisher (Pinnacle) - 44* (20)

Fisher was able to produce an epic cameo down the order for Pinnacle, hitting five sixes as they set a total of 7/176. He also bowled seven tidy overs without luck.

Matthew Johnson (Magpies) - 35 (37)

Pushed the envelope the best for Magpies during their run chase, but was ultimately unable to lift them to victory.

Fourth grade

Ricky Deguara (Walkerston) - 43* (64)

Produced a clutch knock coming in at number five to get the Roosters to victory as the team found itself in a spot of bother during the run chase.

Tyler Morris (Walkerston) - 3/37 (7 overs)

Took some key wickets throughout the match to ensure his side stayed in the hunt throughout.

Bodie Galvin (Magpies) - 46 (40)

Got the Magpies to a total they had a decent shot at defending with some impressive shots.

Gerard Petit (Magpies) - 3/8 (4 overs)

Was damaging when presented with the opportunity, helped to put his side well and truly in the hunt.
