The first round of the 2024-25 Mackay Cricket Association season is now in the history books, so it’s time to take a look at 11 of the best players from the season opener in the round 1 team of the week:

1. Jakob Frerichs (Walkerston) - 70 (64)

The Scrubbies opener put on a clinic at the top of the order, belting 10 boundaries including a six to help his side to a monster first-innings total.

2. Darryn Dyer (Pioneer Valley) - 47 (36)

Pioneer Valley’s new recruit made an immediate impression, notching up a quickfire 47 with eight boundaries at the top of the order.

3. Rhys McBride (Magpies) - 54* (38)

McBride led a very comfortable Magpies run chase against Norths, picking up 11 boundaries including a six on his way to an unbeaten half-century.

4. Luke Jackson (Walkerston) - 62 (59), 2-22 (4 overs)

Walkerston’s veteran all-rounder backed up his efforts from the previous evening in the T20 Smash, notching up 62 at better than a run a ball before picking up a pair of scalps as the Scrubbies secured a convincing victory.

5. Chris Mceldowney (Walkerston) - 82* (61), 1-17 (4 overs)

The highest scoring innings of the round, Mceldowney put Brothers to the sword in the second half of Walkerston’s innings, smashing 11 boundaries including four sixes.

6. Mitchell Casey (Brothers) - 27 (20)

It was slim pickings through the middle-order of all three games as most teams were either bundled out or didn’t lose wickets, but Casey produced a solid fightback for Brothers with five boundaries including a six in his relatively short time at the crease.

7. Joel Bruun (Pioneer Valley, wk) - 17* (23), 1 catch, 2 run outs

Bruun guided PV home for a comfortable win with the bat, but his real success came behind the stumps, where he took a catch along with two unassisted run outs to help his side bundle out Souths lower order.

8. Cody Filewood (Pioneer Valley) - 2-26 (8 overs), 14 (18)

Filewood didn’t have his absolute best day out for PV, but his efforts with the ball, plus a minor contribution with the bat, earned him a spot down the order.

9. Cameron Tomerini (Brothers) - 2-28 (8 overs, 2 maidens), 13 (20)

Tomerini was the bowler who stood the tallest for Brothers in what was a challenging day in the field, keeping his economy rate under four runs an over and picking up the wickets of both Frerichs and Jackson.

10. Isaac Borg (Magpies) - 2-15 (6 overs, 2 maidens)

The Magpies skipper produced a tidy and yet damaging performance with the ball, picking up a pair of wickets while restricting Norths to less than three runs an over.

11. Mackenzie Ralphs (Walkerston) - 3-38 (6 overs)

The only bowler to pick up three scalps on the weekend, Ralphs ensured that an already difficult run chase for Brothers was nigh impossible.
