Junior cricket is alive and well in Mackay, so with two weeks in the books let’s take a look at the under-15 and 17 young guns who are setting the standard in the Mackay Cricket Association this season.

Under-15s

Callum Strydom (Brothers) - 3-1 (3 overs), 56 (66)

Strydom produced an extraordinary match-winning performance in round 1 of the competition, picking up three top order wickets to dig into Norths’ batting lineup before notching up a half-century of his own to help steer his side to victory.

Henry Tully (Magpies White) - 86 (88)

He wasn’t able to get the Magpies victory against a strong Walkerston opponent, but nonetheless he was the standout performer with the bat in round 1.

Matthew Logan (Proserpine) - 77* (60)

10 boundaries and an undefeated 77 made this a close contender for the best batting performance in round 1 of the season.

Logan Simpkin (Walkerston Red) - 77 (63)

A swashbuckling performance from Walkerston’s first-drop, Simpkin, was crucial to their round 1 win as he set them on the path to a total of 7/188 in 25 overs.

Joshua Head (Pioneer Valley) - 3-4 (4 overs)

Head was the ideal blend of damaging yet also economical in his four over spell for PVs against Walkerston Green.

Lachlan Bath (Walkerston Green) - 4-16 (5 overs)

Bath gave Walkerston half a chance of defending a measly total of 7-79 with his four scalps on economical figures.

Max Pomeroy (Proserpine) - 4-4 (2 overs)

Pomeroy was one of two Proserpine bowlers to put Brothers to the sword in their round 2 clash, picking up four wickets for just four runs in his two overs of action.

Kai McLoughlin (Proserpine) - 3-17 (5 overs)

The other half of the equation as Proserpine ran though Brothers to have them all out at 7-38, McLoughlin did the damage up the top of the order unassisted with two bowled and an LBW.

Jacob Whitby (Magpies Black) - 50 (49)

A run-a-ball half-century from Whitby laid the foundation for Magpies’ victory over Pioneer Valley in round 2.

Henry Tully (Magpies White) - 113* (92)

Tully one-upped his own efforts in round 1 with an even better performance in round 2, scoring well over half of his side’s total of 199 in their win.

Matthew Logan (Proserpine) - 52* (50)

Logan selflessly retired after bringing up his half-century in what was a successful day out for Proserpine.

Akhil Gogula (Norths) - 71 (72)

In a great day out for Norths, Gogula led the charge with a big knock to help them chase down their target.

Under-17s

Ben Valmadre (Proserpine) - 53 (54)

Proserpine’s No.3 put together a key performance at the top of the order which proved vital to his side getting over the line against Magpies.

Marcus Sammut (Walkerston) - 54 (40)

Sammut notched up his half-century at electric pace, laying the groundwork for a monster total for Scrubbies in their win over the Magpies.

Ishan Rana (Magpies Black) - 52 (61)

Rana scored almost half of Magpies’ runs in their loss to Proserpine.
