Mikayla Webb impresses at state championships carnivals, wants to race at Brisbane 2032 Olympics

When she claimed two podium placings at the state championships, Mikayla Webb was only a stone’s throw away from the venue that holds her dream.

Palaszczuk ‘deserves’ to be minister for the Brisbane Olympics

As she readies herself in the starting blocks and waits for the starting gun, Mikayla Webb imagines she’s at the Gabba, in front of a packed stadium and with millions of eyes on her from around the world.

While her Olympics dream may be 11 years away, the junior sprinter from Mackay was just a stone’s throw from the venue that will host the 100 metre final in 2032.

Webb does not travel to Brisbane for race meets unless they are major events, and the Olympic Games fits the bill.

“I only really go to Brisbane for the bigger competitions, I usually compete in Townsville instead,” she said.

“Olympics are the ultimate goal for me, but not sooner for 2032.”

Webb could not beat her personal bests at the recent Queensland All Schools Championships, but she still took out second in the 200m and third in the 100m.

She said the competition was strong at the tournament, as it included some of the state’s best sprinters.

“I went to the event aiming for personal bests more than actual results, so I was a bit disappointed I didn’t get them,” she said.

“But I’ve already qualified for nationals in February, so I’m pretty excited for those.”

Barring any Covid outbreak, Webb will make the trip to Perth to compete against Australia’s best junior athletes.

Her times of 25.20sec in the 200m and 12.36sec in the 100m in Townsville in October were enough to qualify for the Australian Track and Field Championships in February.

“I always enjoy the road trips to Townsville and Brisbane, they’re a bit of fun,” she said.

“It’s just athletics for me, I don’t play any other sports, but I only really do sprints, I don’t really like anything longer than 200 metres.”
