Shirley Creese - A selfless volunteer for sporting communities in Mackay - is being remembered across the region.
Ms Creese died on March 9 at the age of 89, leaving behind her son Bradford Creese and companion, Clifford Walker.
Ms Creese was a life member of Mackay softball, football and soccer associations.
Hundreds of locals have shared their memories of the “best supporter of soccer in Mackay” in comments on Facebook.
“Shirley was such a hard worker for so many sporting associations,” Joanne Downes wrote.
“I knew her firstly through the butcher shop, then through soccer.”
The Magpies Mackay Football Club posted they had “lost a beloved and supported member”.
“Many of you would have met Shirley working the gate of Magpies Mackay, and other local clubs, for many years,” the club wrote.
“Shirley’s warm smile and bubbly personality greeted every player and spectator – she will be dearly missed - rest peacefully, Shirley.”
In her honour, Football Queensland Whitsunday Coast referees and teams across senior competitive matches observed a minute silence before kick-off during the weekend’s games.
Mackay Lions said it was with “deep regret” to hear of Shirley’s passing.
“(She had a) cheeky sense of humour and infectious smile,” the club posted.
“We thank Shirley for the many years supporting the Lions family. You will be incredibly missed.”
