Mackay netballer, Wyer, left ‘gobsmacked’ after award

NETBALL: Mackay’s Bette Wyer was so shocked about receiving a prestigious service to netball award, she dropped the trophy.

NETBALL: Mackay's Bette Wyer was so shocked about receiving a prestigious service to netball award, she dropped the trophy.

"The only word I can think of to describe it was gobsmacked," Wyer said.

"I wasn't paying attention to what was being said and then I heard my name and everyone was clapping.

"You do things and you don't expect awards for them but it is lovely when they come."

Wyer has been associated with Mackay Netball for 23 years, and started Brothers Netball Club in Mackay.

Now she is the Netball Queensland Whitsunday region president.

"I was a regional coaching officer for three or four years and on the regional committee," Wyer said.

"I've been the president, for I think, 10 years now."

Wyer said there had been ups and downs during her more than two decades in netball in Mackay.

"The downs can really get you down but the ups make up for it," she said.

"It's all about seeing the little kids out on court enjoying themselves. Yeah I love to see the seniors enjoying themselves too but it's about those kids out there smiling, getting out in the sun and having fun, that's what it's all about."

It has been a big year for Wyer. She received a Mackay Regional Council Australia Day Award and was second placegetter in the North Queensland Sportstar Awards' service to sport award in March.

Wyer is not slowing down either, she was just re-elected Brothers president and has nominated as regional president too. "You don't have time to think about stopping," she laughed.
