Mackay’s Meterottes has a new face for the beginning of the NBL 1 2023 season as it appoints a head coach.
Long term assistant Jaimey Doevendans has taken the reins after being involved in myriad development teams within the basketball organisation over the past decade.
Doevendans was part of two QBL championship sides with the men before switching to the women’s side as an assistant for the past seven seasons.
If those credentials weren’t enough, the Mackay local cut his teeth as an assistant coach for the North Queensland under 16 and 18 women‘s side which club president Tara Smyth said showed his “commitment”.
“While it’s his first season as a head coach at this level, he brings extensive experience to the role,” Smyth said.
“I have no doubt he’ll do great things with our McDonald's Mackay Meteorettes program in 2023 and 2024.”
For Doevendans, an elevation to head coach brings pride but also an emphasis on continuing to develop the program’s culture.
“I am honoured in leading the McDonald’s Mackay Meteorettes for the next two seasons,” Doevendans said.
“My focus is to continue to create a culture and style of play built around working hard and competing with pride and passion.”
The Meterottes enter pre-season training this week, two months out from the season’s official start.
It will announce player signings in weeks to come.
