Two Mackay men arrested at NRL semi-final at BB Print Stadium

A footy fan’s excitement for the game, and his reluctance to follow the stadium’s rules, has led to his arrest after assaulting a police officer.

Man arrested after allegedly smoking at NRL clash in Mackay

Two arrests in one night have spoiled the final NRL match played in Mackay for 2021.

With more than 6000 fans packing BB Print Stadium’s permanent and temporary stands Saturday night, police were kept busy monitoring crowd behaviour.

A 42-year-old Gold Coast man was arrested after he allegedly refused to wear a mask when asked repeatedly.

Police attempted to remove the man from the stadium, who was shouting abuse at the officers.

He then allegedly struck an officer in an attempt to free himself.

The man from Currumbin Waters was charged with causing a public nuisance and for assaulting police.

He has made police bail, and his case will be heard in Mackay Magistrates Court on October 11.

Police also arrested a 34-year-old man after he allegedly refused to co-operate with security guards at the stadium.

The man was allegedly smoking a cigarette, and when he was asked to stop, he refused.

Police intervened, asking the man to leave the stadium, to which he also allegedly refused.

He was then placed under arrest and forcibly removed from the stadium.

The Mackay man has been charged with failing to leave a licenced premise, contravening police direction, obstructing police and causing a public nuisance.

He is expected to have these charges heard in Mackay Magistrates Court on October 13.
