Mackay Cup races a day out for patrons across Central Queensland

A day of highs and lows was experienced by many at the Mackay Cup, with the euphoria of victory only sometimes outweighing the hangover of drunken defeat.

Every year Jackson Edwards travels more than four hours to witness his one love: horse racing.

The avid racing patron makes the annual trek from his hometown Emerald to visit the sugar city for the Mackay Cup each year.

Mr Edwards said he loved everything that encapsulated a day at the races.

“How many other days on the calendar do people get to put on their best suits and dresses, enjoy a day in the sun, and get along with everyone,” he said.

“If you are barracking for the same horse as someone else, then you are best friends for the rest of the day; it’s a love no one can explain.

“I love the races, every year I try to make my way north to see some friends and to enjoy the day.”

Katie Cheshire from Mackay said she also enjoyed the day, despite losing most of her bets.

“It’s been a great day, everyone looks good on days like today,” she said.

“We didn’t win any of our bets so that was disappointing, but that’s a part of the day and I had money set aside to bet with so it’s okay.”

Peter and Will Hulbert’s horse Hail Manhattan comfortably took out the CEQ Mackay Cup, with the 2000m event the final race of the day.

Mackay will host its next race meet on August 10, with seven races set to take place at the Ooralea racetrack.
