The first third of the Mackay Cricket Association’s first grade one-day season is in the books, let’s take a look at what we’ve learned about each team so far this season.
1. Magpies
The Magpies have had the perfect start to the season with a 3-0 record, and a whopping five bonus points which have lifted them into top spot on the ladder.
Their bowling performances have been crucial to their success, as while they have yet to have any dominant run scorers they’ve looked to the likes of Andrew and Isaac Borg as well as Conor Bryant to take key wickets.
2. Walkerston
By contrast, Scrubbies have been able to put up consistently impressive numbers batting wise, with the top two run scorers in the competition both coming out of Walkerston (Etienne Pretorius and Luke Jackson). They’ve scored at least 230 runs in all three matches thus far.
They trail Magpies by just one point while having opened up a massive 18-point lead on the rest of the pack.
3. Pioneer Valley
PV is still well and truly in the hunt for the finals, despite being a distant third in terms of points.
With a number of their star players having been unavailable for multiple games, expect them to kick things up a notch once they have a full-strength side on hand.
4. Souths
Souths struggled with the bat in the first couple of matches, losing 20 wickets for a total of 219 runs across round 1 and 2.
However, they picked up steam in round 3 with a victory over Brothers, with Muhammad Wahab and skipper Shaun Austin finding their groove at the top of the order.
5. Norths
An impressive run chase which saw Norths chase down a target of 249 kept them off the bottom of the ladder against Brothers, as apart from that game they’ve had a disappointing start to the 2024-25 season.
Chris Day has impressed with the bat at the top of the order, but the side will need others to join him if they want to dig themselves out of this hole.
6. Brothers
They’ve struggled mightily across three games so far, despite some brilliant individual performances from the likes of Jack Law and Cameron Tomerini.
They’ll need to find some consistent contributors over the next few weeks to help them right the ship for the remainder of the season.
