The 2023/24 Regional Queensland Gridiron season kicked off on Saturday with the Rockhampton Wolverines downing the Cairns Falcons 24-19 in a nailbiting clash.
Mackay’s Wests Leagues Club played host to the day of festivities, which was supposed to feature a double-header.
Unfortunately the second match between the Mackay Mavericks and Townsville Cyclones had to be cancelled, with a fire shutting down the Bruce Highway and leaving half the Cyclones team stranded in Bowen.
The Mavericks are set to undertake their first official match against Cairns at Vico Oval next Saturday, while Townsville will host the Wolverines at Townsville Sports Reserve.
