As the weather begins to heat up, Mackay’s cricketers will look to the shorter Twenty20 format for their summer fix.

The first round of the Dixon Holmes Twenty20 tournament was played on the weekend.

Taking a pause from the DBCT Cup, batsmen took centre stage across the first round of action with Brothers opener Matt Wicks continuing his hot form to help his side to a win.

Wicks was not hungry for runs - he was starving, sending the ball around the oval for a 70-run innings off just 38 balls to set his side up for an 214-run opening.

With the Norths Cricket Club under immense pressure to create a healthy run rate early it was the Brothers bowlers who worked quickly to keep their side in a commanding position.

It was a gallant effort from the bottom order of the Norths with Mason Kohler reaching 59 runs off just 27 balls to fall short of a come-from-behind win.

Over at Harrup Park, Magpies took on Walkerston with the top two sides in the DBCT Cup looking to bring the fireworks.

Eventually dismissed the team struggled, Adam Zurvas was sent back to the sheds after making 128 runs in 20 overs.

Walkerston had hoped to apply the pressure on the Magpies’ bowlers.

Jakob Frerichs started with 25 runs and it seemed the side would ease into the innings to run out victors.

The Magpies’ bowling attack became lethal as Finley Wilson stormed down the pitch to take three key wickets, helping his side run out big winners against the in-form Walkerson.

The final match of the round was between Pioneer Valley and the South Sharks as the pair looked to resurge their sides after a tough campaign in the DBCT Cup.

Pioneer Valley’s Mitch English came back with a point to prove, scoring 66 runs in his sides win against the South Sharks on the weekend.

Pioneer Valley went on to score 195 runs in what turned out to be a batting clinic.

With the Sharks needing to chase down this monster total, opener Brad Harriot did his best with a 30-run innings but the rest of the side failed to make a dent in the grand total, eventually falling short of the win.

With round two this weekend, it will be the teams’ last chance to face each other before the Christmas break.
