Two undefeated sides, Magpies and Walkerston, will compete for bragging rights in the DBCT Poole Cup this weekend in a top of the table clash not to be missed at Magpies Sporting Club.
As the DBCT Cup approaches round five, some of the best names in Mackay are starting to prove themselves amongst the competition, and we have identified 10 you might just want to keep an eye on.
Adam Zurvas: Magpies Cricket Club
Currently leading the batting within the competition, Zurvas is helping Magpies to the top of the table with some huge knocks over the first four rounds.
Opening is never an easy task, but with Zurvas capable of knocking back 120 in an innings, it’s no wonder he’s one of the best to watch across the competition.
Peter Blaik: Walkerston Cricket Club
Another weapon with the bat, Walkerston’s Peter Balik is capable of getting comfy and staying comfy as he continues to lead the club forward.
Having reached 108 in round two, Blaik will be one the Magpies bowling attack will have pinpointed as a crucial wicket early in their push to remain undefeated.
Lane Kohler: Norths Cricket Club
The X factor. Lane Kohler by design is more a bowler than batsman, but after a serious knock of 81 in round two he's very handy in the Norths order.
With the ball in hand, he's even more dangerous claiming a wicket a game and even a haul of four in round two to go with it.
Jakob Frerichs: Walkerston Cricket Club
Enter one of the best with the ball in the comp is Jakob Frerichs.
Frerichs has been lethal through the first four rounds of the Cup, claiming wickets left right and centre to tear apart the top order of teams, while also producing some 30-plus run performances with the bat.
Andrew Borg: Magpies Cricket Club
Andrew Borg is the type of player at the moment you don't want to feel good, as he can be devastating with both bat and ball in hand.
The all-rounder has staked his claim as a great opening batsmen with a knock of 61, and has also taken three in two separate games with the ball.
Benjamin Zurvas: Magpies Cricket Club
Brother to Adam, Benjamin is starting to come alive in the batting ranks, having recently knocked back a half century in the Magpies’ round four game against the Brothers.
Coming in at three, Benjamin can set this Magpies side up well should one of the openers go early, and if given the chance to play into his game could prove to be difficult.
Matthew Wicks: Brothers Cricket Club
An all rounder for the Brothers, Wicks’ best this season has come with the bat in hand, knocking out scores of 49 and 51 across his three games thus far.
Given some time with the ball when needed he is handy for five or so overs to get the batsmen worried, and come Saturday could see himself in the bowling line up once again.
Mason Kohler: Norths Cricket Club
Mason Kohler started the season hotter than a Mackay summer, after a 70 run performance put his name up in lights as one of the ones to watch this year.
Struggling a little since then, it’s his time to shine once more, and he will see himself with some stints in the bowling rotation too.
Conor Bryant: Magpies Cricket Club
One of the best bowlers in the comp, Conor Bryant is coming into this weekend in some piping hot form after a great performance in round four.
Taking 3/21 and 3/25 in his only two appearances this year, Bryant if playing Saturday could prove to be a difference maker. It is noted Bryant may be carrying an injury.
Sam Vasallo: Walkerston Cricket Club
The final player to keep your eyes on is Sam Vasallo, who through three games of the season was averaging 38 runs for his Walkerston side.
The opening batsmen for Walkerston will be pivotal to the quest to be undefeated after round five, and if able to get into his innings could prove catastrophic for the Magpies.
