Claire Colwill vying for Queensland Junior Sports Star of the Year

She is one of Mackay’s top sporting prodigies and is ‘burning the house down in the world of hockey’. Now she’s in the running for a major award those who know her say is richly deserved.

One of Mackay’s top sporting prodigies has been nominated as a finalist in a prestigious Queensland award.

Hockey sensation Claire Colwill has been nominated for an award at the Queensland Sport Awards night, to be held on November 25.

Colwill is one of five finalists for Queensland Junior Sports Star of the Year.

Lachlan Buckman, Kane Nelson, Mollie O’Callagan and Hugo Ralph are the other finalists for the award.

Colwill has been a professional athlete since her 16th birthday, when she signed with the Brisbane Blaze.

The teenager joined the side in the inaugural season of the Hockey One competition, and has since exploded on the national scene.

She led Mackay to the Division 1 title at the Queensland under-18s State Championships in 2021 for the first time in more than 25 years and winning her third-straight Player of the Tournament award.

Colwill also represented Queensland in the under-21s competition, and has made her U21s debut for Australia.

Arsenal hockey player Antoinette Morton, who plays at the same club in Mackay as Colwill did, said she was one of the most talented players she had seen.

“Claire is absolutely burning the house down in the world of hockey,” Ms Morton said.

“She’s an exceptional young woman and hockey player, and really a great representation of our club.

“It’s been fantastic to see her do so well, on both the state and national stage.”
