Writing for the Daily Mercury on a regular basis, Andy Thomsen will share his fishing tales, hints, tips and local knowledge.

Thomsen has a particular passion for fly fishing and is keen to promote the technique as well as encourage young people to get outside and explore while respecting our native flora and fauna.

He operates a charter business specialising in saltwater fly fishing, sight casting and flats fishing from a custom built 5.6 metre long fly fishing boat 'Incognito'.

"The pristine waters of the Whitsunday Islands are home to hundreds of species of fish including golden trevally, permit, queen fish, black spot tusk fish, mangrove jack, barramundi, tarpon, northern blue fin tuna, mack tuna, Spanish mackerel, school mackerel, spotty mackerel, coral trout, 10 cod species and many more fishes," he said.

But he's open to using a range of styles from lures to jigging.

It doesn't matter the fish, Thomsen admits he loves a challenge.

Based in Prosperine, Thomsen travels around - focusing his efforts on seasonal change and resulting fish behaviour.

He has created a following through his YouTube channel Andy's Fishing and uploads two new videos every week of his fishing adventures.

Thomsen gave up his day job as an engineer and is now focused on his fishing future which includes travelling around the world, building up his YouTube channel and working as a fishing guide.

It's not only fishing that gives Thomsen a thrill - he's an adventurer.

"I fly hang gliders, nano trikes and paragliders. Bow hunting is also a passion of mine, mostly targeting pigs and other feral game animals," he said.
