NOW seven years old, this Mackay school is going through its own growth spurt, opening up new buildings to support its expanding student population.

Most of its students are still in lockdown but Mackay Northern Beaches State High School is celebrating the construction of its first demountable classrooms.

"The Northern Beaches is the fastest growing region in Mackay," principal Sian Burrows said.

"The school has had to physically grow to meet that demand.

"These resources will provide for the changing needs of students."

Since 2013 the school has expanded from 350 children to more than 1000 students enrolled from Years 7 to 12.

Despite being the first demountables at the school, Ms Burrows said they blended in with the other classrooms.

"They look like they've been at the school since day one," she said.

Ms Burrows said the new buildings included two classrooms, which would each fit 28 students, and new chaplains' and nurses' offices.

With many students yet to return from their coronavirus lockdown, Ms Burrows said the campus was very quiet.

But she said it was still a busy time to be a teacher with digital lessons to prepare and some students still attending.
