Get ready to circle a date on the calendar for your next visit to Mackay’s picturesque islands with a specially designed catamaran under construction.

Red Cat Adventures is building the vessel on the Gold Coast to use on its Pure Escape tour offering tourists a chance to visit Cockermouth Island and other islands in the Mackay region.

Owner Asher Telford said he was “incredibly thankful” for the state government’s Growing Tourism Infrastructure grant for partly-funding the build.

“The new product will allow us to showcase the incredible islands, beaches, snorkelling and fishing spots,” Mr Telford said.

“The main tour will be an exclusive day trip as well as offering adventurous outer reef experiences and Pioneer River cruises.

“The Mackay region has so much to offer and we’re really looking forward to the launch.”

Mackay Tourism CEO Tas Webber said the catamaran, which is expected be completed by October, will boost tourism in the region.

“Before COVID-19, the Mackay region had 13 consecutive quarters of growth in tourism and this boat will help us carry forward that positive momentum,” Mr Webber said.

“The Mackay region will be able to once again have access to islands, which in turn will drive more visitation.”

The Pure Escape project is estimated to add 5600 tourists and about $1.9 million into the local economy each year.
