To be the best at making delicious breads, pastries and pies, you have to pour your heart and soul into it.

That is according to Kim Hogan, who together with her husband Colin, owns and operates the bakery Whitsunday Times readers voted as the best in the Whitsundays.

Walking into their Proserpine Pies and Pastries shop, your stomach’s rumbling kicks up a notch and your sense of smell is aroused as you take in the glorious array of treats such as the lovingly handmade apple turnovers with fresh cream bigger than your face.

But Mrs Hogan said the secret to their success was not in the steps of a family recipe but from variety, being strict on quality and consistency and most importantly, putting their heart and soul into everything they made.

“You find something that works and you stick to it and you don’t change,” Mrs Hogan said.

“We go through a lot of apple turnovers, custard tarts and salad rolls and sandwiches walk out the door.

“Vanilla slice, that’s a winner.

“And the doughnuts, (they) rival Krispy Kreme’s (doughnuts).”

Mrs Hogan, who employs 15 staff at their Main Street bakery, said they also took pride in their pies made with meat from the local butcher.

“It’s important to support all small local businesses because big places like supermarkets and shopping centres suck the life out of little places like mine,” she said.

“Shop in your local town as much as you possibly can.”
