ROGUE public housing tenants causing more than $5 million in damages across the state have been told to change their behaviour or get out.
New laws that came into effect last year in Queensland appear to be helping unruly tenants mend their ways, with 51 out of 1277 bad tenants kicked out.
The three-strike policy was brought in to encourage people to respect their heavily subsidised public housing properties and respect their neighbours.
Out of 1277 first strikes issued, a further 291 of those people - 25% - received a second warning, and of those, 51 tenants were made to leave.
During Question Time in state parliament on Tuesday, Housing Minister Tim Mander said before the changes, he had listened to residents in tears about their "neighbours from hell".
"The message to a small minority is that if you cannot respect government property or your neighbours, then you have no future in public housing," he said.
He added the success of the program would be based on the number of people whose behaviour could be modified to allow them to stay in a property.
