’Prime real estate just going to waste’
‘The Harbour and East Point have a lot to offer for tourism.’

IN RELATION to an article on creating more waterfront living in Mackay, (DM 1/1/19) I would like to ask why East Point is not being considered.
Harbour Beach is a much better beach than Town Beach, especially when the tide is out.
The East Point development was stopped by our environmentalists to protect the area, especially the bird life. If anyone takes the time to have look at the status now they will see it has become a playground for off road vehicles and motorbikes.
It is unmanaged and is becoming an environmental mess.
The original development included a golf course and accommodation complex … if you look at the Mackay golf course, there is an abundance of bird life.
Other developments mentioned for East Point in your paper this past year included a caravan park; also being a caravaner, I’m sure this would encourage tourists. This is prime real estate just going to waste.
I live at the marina and enjoy it immensely. To say it is too far out is rubbish. It has been voted one of the best marinas in the country and people who live here love the lifestyle.
As far as being available to the public, it is, and the waterfront promenade is very popular. The maintenance of this area is paid for by the residents and many people come here to enjoy it.
Everybody has their own wish list, but I think the harbour and East Point have a lot to offer for tourism.
I agree with Paul Flanagan, who wrote about the vacant restaurants and shops at the marina. I guess if people don’t support the businesses, then they can’t survive.
Maybe the rents are too high and the owners would be better to lower rents and give some incentives for businesses to return.
