A Mackay man who punched a dog in the face in a shocking act of animal cruelty will be sentenced on Thursday.

Tyler Jay Halliday on Tuesday pleaded guilty to one count each of animal cruelty and breaching his duty of care for a boxer named Sprocket on April 17, 2020 at Blacks Beach.

Mackay Magistrates Court heard Halliday abused, tormented, terrified and injured Sprocket by standing over the animal, threatening it with a closed fist, hitting it in the face and throwing an object at the dog.

The court heard Halliday also failed to ensure his handling of the animal was appropriate.

Magistrate James Morton adjourned the sentence to Thursday and warned Halliday if he did not show up a warrant would be issued for his arrest.
