Townsville man charged over fatal Bruce Highway crash at Bloomsbury

A Townsville driver who allegedly caused a multi-vehicle crash that claimed the life of an interstate traveller has charged over the deadly highway collision between Mackay and Proserpine.

The horror three-vehicle crash involving a Toyota LandCruiser, Isuzu truck and Mazda CX5 at Bloomsbury on August 1 that shut the highway for several hours.

Police alleged a LandCruiser travelling north had crossed into the oncoming traffic lane about 2.50pm striking an Isuzu truck towing a dog trailer, and then a white Mazda Cx5 travelling behind.

The LandCruiser rolled landing on its roof and passing motorists including a passing forensic crash officer, who were first on scene, pulled the horrifically injured driver from the upside down mangled wreck.

He, a 21-year-old Kelso man, was flown to Townsville Hospital with serious injuries.

The Mazda was forced into bushland following the impact.

The driver, a 72-year-old man from Victoria, was critically injured in the collision and also flown to Townsville.

Tragically he succumbed to his injuries two weeks later and died in hospital on August 14.

A passenger in the LandCruiser, a 34-year-old Mundingburra man, the driver of the Isuzu, a 61-year-old Sarina man, and a passenger in the Cx5, a 69-year-old Clifton Hill woman, received minor injuries and were taken to Mackay Base Hospital.

Following investigations by Mackay’s Forensic Crash Unit police have charged the driver of the Toyota.

He is facing one count of careless driving causing death and will appear in Mackay Magistrates Court on November 25.
