A teen girl remains critical in hospital after suffering life-threatening injuries in a horror highway crash with a truck in the Whitsundays, the second serious incident along that stretch of roadway in the past two months.
Multiple emergency crews were called to a two-vehicle crash on the Bruce Highway at Myrtlevale about 3.25pm Friday following reports of a collision involving a car and a semi-trailer.
As a result, a 17-year-old girl, who was the driver, suffered significant head injuries.
She was taken to Proserpine Hospital before being flown to Townsville University Hospital where she remained in a critical condition on Saturday.
A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said the Forensic Crash Unit was investigating.
Initial investigations indicate the car had been in the process of performing a U-turn when the collision occurred with the northbound truck near the Gunno Go Holiday Park.
A Queensland Fire Department spokeswoman said crews received reports of a crash between a car and semi-trailer, with one vehicle on the roadway and one off.
The QFD spokeswoman said crews helped remove a person from one of the vehicles, which was done by 3.45pm.
As a result of the crash, the Bruce Highway was closed for several hours.
This comes barely two months after a 22-year-old Mackay woman was killed when her BMW exploded into flames following a head-on crash on the Bruce Highway, also at Myrtlevale, just after 5pm on August 15.
The young woman had been at the wheel of the BMW when police allege a silver Rodeo dual cab ute allegedly crossed into the wrong lane and the two vehicles collided.
The 61-year-old Bowen man, who had been driving the ute, was also seriously injured in the crash which blocked the highway until late into the night.
